SNAPVGA
by
Richard Q. Fox
Version 1.0 July 1988
SNAPVGA is a Shareware program that displays any GIF graphic file
in VGA format. All pictures captured by GIF and displayed through
SNAPVGA will automatically have the correct height to width ratio
and will appear in true perspective. The entire picture is in
view at one time.

SNAPVGA FEATURES
SNAPVGA has four main capabilities. One, SNAPVGA automatically
displays a GIF picture in VGA format on an IBM PC or clone. Many
GIF pictures were originally in MAC, Atari, or some other format
and previously required scrolling to view them on the IBM.
SNAPVGA compresses or expands the picture while retaining true
proportions, allowing the user to view the entire picture at
once.
SNAPVGA's second important feature allows the user to alter the
brightness and contrast of the picture without having to move to
another graphics program. The picture can then be saved to disk
or printed or both.
Finally, SNAPVGA can make a hard copy printout of any GIF file on
the OKIMATE 20 or STAR NX-1000 Rainbow printer. The printout has
the correct aspect ratio, is in 256 colors, and is 8" x 10" in
landscape format. SNAPVGA is issued in 2 versions. One support
the OKIMATE 20. The other supports the STAR NX-1000 Rainbow.
Otherwise, the two versions are identical.
SNAPVGA COMMANDS
SNAPVGA is a straight forward, menu driven program that is easy
to use. When first accessed, SNAPVGA places a blue menu on screen
with the selected command highlighted in red. The commands are:
Directory
Introduction
Load a Picture
Change Colors
Print Picture
Save a Picture
Exit
Commands are accessed by using the up and down arrows. When the
desired command is highlighted in red, press carriage return to
access that command. Alternately, the first letter of each
command may be pressed, or the space bar may be pressed.
The Introduction gives a brief synopsis of the program and how to
use it.
The Directory is the way to go if the user wants to load a
picture but isn't sure of the name, doesn't know what disk it is
on, or can't remember the spelling.
The Directory function prompts the user for the disk path. If the
source is the current path, pressing return will list the
contents of that directory. Typing the disk drive and
subdirectory followed by a carriage return will also bring in the
contents of the disk.
Loading pictures via the Directory allows the user to search
several disks to locate the picture without having to first find
the picture, then load SNAPVGA, then load the picture. This time
saving feature permits the handling of many pictures at one
sitting and eliminates the need to search for pictures before
using the program.
The Directory sorts up to 240 GIF file names alphabetically. The
window shows 60 file names. Use the cursor arrow keys to scroll
through the full list of up to 240 file names. Even better, press
the FIRST LETTER of the file name, to jump the cursor to the area
of the window that contains files starting with that letter.
Press ENTER to display the picture, or press ESCAPE to return to
the Main Menu. The ESCAPE key may also be used to abort back to
the Main Menu while the picture is loading.
While the Directory is being displayed, you may use the F9 key to
find out the specifications of the highlighted file in the
directory list. A small window will pop up, showing the height,
width, and color resolution of the GIF file. A typical file might
by reported as 320 x 200, in 256 colors. You may select the file
while the specification window is showing, by pressing the
"ENTER" key, or you may use the cursor arrows to move on to other
files in the directory.
The Load command allows direct loading of pictures from any
drive. The load command first prompts for the path, followed by a
carriage return. The user is then prompted for the file name and
the file extender. If no file extender is entered, an extender of
GIF is assumed. Many users are adding their own personal
extenders to GIF files to facilitate sorting. Extenders such as
.trv (for travel) for example are recognized by the Load command
of SNAPVGA as long as the file is in GIF format. While the
picture is loading, the ESCAPE key may be pressed to abort back
to the Main Menu.
The Save commands operates the same as the Load command. The user
is asked to specify the path, the drive, the file name and the
extender. If the specified name already exists, pressing carriage
return will save the file.
WARNING: WHEN SAVING A PICTURE WITH SNAPVGA, IT IS BEST TO SAVE
THE FILE UNDER A NEW NAME TO AVOID OVERWRITING THE ORIGINAL GIF
FILE. ALL FILES WRITTEN BY SNAPVGA ARE 320x200 by 256 COLORS,
REGARDLESS OF THE FORMAT OF THE ORIGINAL FILE.
Change Color allows the user to change the brightness and
contract of any picture. The Function keys provide the control
over the brightness and contrast.
F1 is the HELP key. Press it at any time for a summary of
instructions.
F2 restores the original palette of the picture. If you do
not like the changes you are making, you can press F2 to
UNDO them. This key may be pressed as often as desired.
F3 Decreases the contrast.
F4 Increases the contrast.
Press these keys as often as needed, until you like the
result. The amount of change made by each depression of a
key can be controlled. The NUMBER keys 1 through 9 select
the step size. "1" is the smallest step size. "9" is the
largest step size. "5" is automatically selected as the
default step size, when you start the program. Press a
NUMBER key, and then press F3 and or F4 repeatedly.
F5 Decreases brightness.
F6 Increases brightness.
The operation of these keys is the same as that for F3 / F4.
F9 Recalls a memorized palette setting.
F10 Saves a memorized palette setting.
While you are experimenting with the brightness and contrast
settings, you can memorize the current setting by pressing
F10. A tone confirms that the setting is memorized. You can
then press any other function keys, to continue
experimenting. When you want to recall the memorized
setting, press F9. You can press F9 repeatedly, without
erasing its setting. The only key that changes the memorized
setting is F10.
Once the picture is to the user's satisfaction, pressing ESC,
SPACE, or ENTER returns SNAPVGA to the main menu. At this point,
the new picture can be saved. The picture may be altered and
saved as many times as the user wishes. Simply save the altered
picture under a new name to avoid destroying the original.
The Print command prints the picture on a OKIMATE 20 or STAR NX-
1000 Rainbow. There are two versions of SNAPVGA, one for each
printer. The printed picture is 8" x 10" and is in landscape
format. The best paper for printing has a waxed, high gloss
surface and can be obtained through office supply stores at about
10 cents a sheet. This paper gives dense, overlapping color
saturation without streaks and gaps.
Exit allows the user to leave SNAPVGA.
DOS COMMAND LINE ENTRY
Snapvga may be initiated with a DOS command line which contains
SNAPVGA and one of the following:
The name of the file to display
If the file exists, it is loaded and displayed
immediately.
The name of the directory to use
If the directory exists, Snapvga goes immediately to
its Directory function, with all file names in that
Directory listed in a window.
Nothing
Snapvga starts with an Title Screen, and a menu of
choices.
Drive names and path names may be included in the argument passed
to Snapvga. A file extender of .GIF is assumed, if no extender is
present for a file name.
Examples:
SNAPVGA a:car.gif (Loads and displays
the file)
SNAPVGA c:\gif\bird.gif (Loads and displays
the file)
SNAPVGA c:\gif (Shows the
directory)
SNAPVGA (Shows the title
screen, ready for
further commands)
PRINTERS
SNAPVGA supports several printers. Each version of the program
supports one printer. This version of the program is written for
the OKIMATE 20 or STAR NX-1000 Rainbow. SNAPVGA uses enhanced
programming which gives OKIMATE 20 and STAR NX-1000 Rainbow
prints crisp, solid color and emulates the screen colors as
closely as possible.
